Gunman killed by police after shootout at Manhattan Cathedral in New York

NYC, USA – Police fatally shoot Man who opened fire outside Manhattan Cathedral. The shooting on the steps of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine took place near a crowd of hundreds, just after a carol service ended.

Police say gunshots were first reported around 3:45 p.m. Sunday on the front steps of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine immediately following the annual concert program. The gunman was seen firing an unknown number of shots outside of the Manhattan church as people outside scattered to take cover.

A choir that had just finished Christmas caroling at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine was lingering atop the cathedral steps when the suspect, who had two handguns, approached the church doors and opened fire into the air, police said.

Two NYPD officers and a sergeant, who were present at the scene, opened fire, striking the gunman in the head, a police source said. NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea hailed the officers as heroes during a press conference Sunday.
