Dutch Riot Police Van slams into a mobility scooter at KOZP-protest in Venlo, the Netherlands

VENLO, THE NETHERLANDS – A police car hit a mobility scooter at a protest in the city of Venlo in the Netherlands on Saterday. The accident happened when Dutch riot police intervened a clash between Kick Out Zwarte Piet (KOZP) action group and counter-protesters.

The police arrested four people at the ‘Zwarte Piet’ protests in Venlo when disturbances broke out, involving throwing eggs and fireworks. Two people are suspected of assault, a police spokesman said. The third person is suspected of insult and the fourth of overt assault.

In addition to the protesters from the Kick Out Zwarte Piet (KOZP) action group, counter-protesters that fight for the preservation of the most populair Dutch Cultural tradition ‘Sinterklaas’ were also present in the Limburg city.

Campaigners of KOZP were in Venlo to express their dissatisfaction with Gray Petes, which is used by the Limburg municipality as an alternative to Black Petes. According to them, there is little difference between the two.
