Video captures fireball explosion after kids playing with fire torched their home in Martinez, CA.
VIDEOKINGS — A two-alarm fire that destroyed a Martinez home, displaced three people and threatened more than a dozen houses in the area on Wednesday was caused by juveniles playing with fire, authorities said.
Investigators determined the blaze started in a backyard on Arthur Road after youths were playing with fire, which “got out of hand in current conditions,” Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said. The juveniles were released to their parents, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded to what bystanders called a small grass fire on a hillside near the 100 block of Cambark Court shortly before 2 p.m., said Steve Hill, a spokesman for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. The fire overtook one single-family house and at a least a dozen cars and motorcycles parked in the yard, he said.
“By the time fire units arrived on scene, the house was fully engulfed and in danger of collapse,” Hill said. “It was difficult to get to because of all the stuff stored around it.”
